OUR VISION: EVERY BARN ANIMAL HAS A SAFE HAVEN IN DISASTERS

BE PREPARED BEFORE DISASTER STRIKES

BE FIREWISE: Create defensible space around your home and barn. See www.Firewise.org

Reduce fire hazards at your barn:

· No smoking in the barn

· Store flammable chemicals in approved safety containers away from occupied structures

· Keep all combustible material (hay, shavings, wood, etc.) in one area and clean up spills

· Rake perimeters, clear weeds & tall grasses from buildings

· Clear roof structures & gutters

· Keep a ladder long enough to reach the barn roof in case of a roof fire

· Have a garden hose (long enough to reach around structures) always connected & with a spray nozzle attached

· Get a battery powered radio to monitor news reports and evacuation broadcasts

Get to know your neighbors and develop a Neighborhood Evacuation Plan

MAKE A LARGE ANIMAL EVACUATION KIT, ready to go at all times.

Put an ID tag on your halters (i.e., dog tag with owner name & phone number).

Place these items in a WHEELED TRASH BARREL with a lid:

· Water bucket(s)

· Hay net

· Leather breakaway halter w/ ID tag & a 3 ft. short lead (synthetic materials can melt)

· Medications and first aid items

· Flashlight, scissors, wire cutters, knife

· Sheets/blankets (cotton, no synthetics)

· Brush and hoof pick

· Any special dietary feed your animal needs
